Plinth for Florence Nightingale Statue

I am honoured to make a Portland stone plinth by Amy Goodman for her statue of Florence Nightingale. It is at a new development of Weston Homes in the former Military hospital in Aldershot. The statue is commissioned to help recognise the importance of the hospital in the history of the British Military. Florence Nightingale’s work had a huge influence on this hospital and her reformation of nursing practices were put into practice here after the Crimean war.

The lettering is based on copperplate which we feel reflects the time and her femininity. The relief carving is of an of oil lamp, the type of lamp Florence used to carry. She got known among her patients as ‘The lady with the lamp’ due to her night time rounds by candle light.
